When I first heard there was a live action Barbie movie in the works, I wasn’t sure how to feel about it. In the era of remaking every treasured childhood classic show or idea into warmed over, woked-up, half-ass buffoonery, I was immediately wary. Like most women my age I grew up with Barbie and spent endless hours playing with my Barbie dolls and my Barbie Dreamhouse and my Barbie camper - one year my grandmother even bought me a Barbie pool. That was a really cool summer for both me and my Barbie. I didn’t want to lose those memories to Hollywood’s preferred religion…politics.
The incessant advertising was also a huge turnoff, and it made me wonder if they were overcompensating for a message that would be sure to turn off the fanbase. I’m just not in the mood for feminist lectures or terrible woke takes on classic stories.
I hadn’t been able to suss out whether or not I would like it. I couldn’t even really tell what the plot was. The conservative commentary crowd couldn’t seem to make up it’s mind about it, and Ben Shapiro hated it so much he literally set a bunch of Barbies on fire and threw them in the trash. Did I even want to waste my time?
So I bought tickets for myself and my daughter, who loved it so much she wanted to see it again, and I gave in to the warm, numb embrace of the advertising cult. We saw it last night and I won’t keep you in any more suspense.
